Microbial Filter

This filter utilizes a symbiotic relationship between plants and people. The plant helps to filter out particles in the water and air that may be harmful to people. People provide the nutrients from the components of the filter to nourish the plant.

Made to mimic wetland filtration, this design utilizes plants role in maintaining water quality. Some pollutants are converted to less toxic forms while others remain in the plant. The pollutants that escape the plant are then processed through a sand and active carbon filter. Carbon filters can effectively remove chlorine, chlorination by-products, fluoride, VOC's, pesticides, particulates and pharmaceuticals.

Inspired by the Hawaiian creation story and the kalo farms of Waipio Valley this filter is made with the idea that humans are not separate from nature.
